Bespoke Soundproof Garden Studio Build — Singer-Songwriter Recording Studio, Brighton
The Brief
Our client is a Brighton-based singer-songwriter and producer who needed a studio capable of standing alongside professional commercial facilities — without leaving home. This particular studio build faced the challenge that the garden backs directly onto a busy mainline railway, meaning vibration isolation wasn't a luxury consideration but a fundamental engineering requirement at the core of the design. The brief called for complete acoustic isolation, a neutral listening environment suited to critical recording and production work, and a build refined enough to match the quality of what would happen inside it.
The Build
We designed and constructed a fully bespoke garden recording studio.
The starting point was the ground itself. With heavy rail traffic passing feet from the boundary, conventional slab foundations weren't an option. We engineered a entirely decoupled interior and exterior shell, preventing structure-borne vibration from entering the interior - significantly limiting the presence of the vibrations caused by the railway line.
The exterior is finished in our black Thermowood clad, a material chosen as much for its longevity and weather performance as its appearance. It sits in the garden with a calm, considered presence.
The build falls comfortably within permitted development guidelines at 2.5 metres in height, meaning no planning application was required.
The Result
The completed construction performs as specified, with a significant reduction in transmission of the vibrations between the exterior and interior shells. Holding it’s own against any professional recording facility.
