Bespoke Recording Studio Build — Home Recording Studio, East Sussex
The Brief
Mark Crew is one of the UK's most successful record producers and mix engineers — with production and writing credits across Bastille's albums including 'Pompeii' and 'Good Grief', Rag'n'Bone Man's breakthrough, The Wombats, and a career that has generated seven UK number one albums. He needed a studio that could stand alongside the industry standard commercial facilities he works in — without leaving home. The brief was uncompromising: complete acoustic isolation, a flat and neutral listening environment, a decay time suitable for critical listening, and a space built to last.
The Build
We designed and delivered a fully bespoke SB-X garden studio from the ground up, engineered specifically around the demands of professional music production and critical listening. The build features a fully decoupled room-within-a-room wall system, double steel doors, and a large double-framed window system — every element of the acoustic envelope addressed, every potential transmission path considered.
The Result
The acoustic performance speaks for itself. Mark can monitor at listening level while deer graze just outside his window — a testament to how completely the outside world has been shut out. The interior is acoustically tuned for a flat, neutral response that meets the same benchmarks as top-tier commercial recording facilities, giving him a world-class workspace at the end of his garden.
“Luke, Richard and the entire Sonic Box team were brilliant from start to finish. They delivered exactly what I had hoped for and went above and beyond to make it the best it could be. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sonic Box, they definitely understand the intricacies and effort required to build a studio that actually works and is soundproofed properly. Thanks Guys!”
