Music Room and Sensory Classroom Build, Surrey
The Brief
A Surrey school needed to expand its specialist provision without the disruption or lengthy construction of an internal building project. The brief called for a single external structure, divided into two distinct and purpose-built spaces: a sensory classroom designed to provide a calm, controlled acoustic environment for pupils and staff who need it, and a music room with an acoustic specification capable of supporting active music education. Both spaces needed to perform independently, within the same building envelope.
The Build
We designed and delivered a garden classroom — a step beyond our standard residential range, specified and built to meet the demands of an educational setting with multiple users, daily use, and two acoustically isolated spaces under one roof.
The exterior is finished in our Thermowood timber, a material chosen for its durability, low maintenance requirements, and considered appearance. Inside, the building is divided into two rooms, each specified around its own acoustic brief. The classroom is designed for calm and control — a quiet, contained environment where sound behaviour is as important as any other design consideration. The music room is built to be a space that needs to handle live instruments, group sessions, and the full energy of active music education.
The two spaces sit within a single structure that functions as a coherent, well-considered building — not a temporary solution, but a permanent addition to the school's specialist provision.
The Result
The building is in constant use. The school has a learning space that genuinely performs for the pupils who need it most, and a music room that handles everything asked of it — from individual practice to group sessions. For a school that needed two specialist spaces without a major building project, the build delivered both in one.
